This art form is a distinctive sculptural style. The artist Rob Goins, a.k.a. "Fishbone" begins the process by first transferring his original hand-drawing of the subject to a sheet of aluminum. This non-ferrous metal is preferred for its unique properties... it is light weight, malleable, and won't rust!
Next "Fish" meticulously cuts out the image using a plasma torch. The highly detailed silhouette is then burnished with a hand-held grinder. The velvety texture is created by swirled patterns in the surface of the metal. This holographic effect that dances with the light produces a striking finish.
Finally the fish truly comes to life as the piece is gently hand-formed, now suggesting a dynamic sense of movement and dimensionality.
Each sculpture captures the characteristic markings and musculature of the species respresented. Although uniquely stylized, Fishbone remains faithful to the specimen's profile.
